I’m From is a Korean skincare brand that is known for looking to nature to find ingredients beneficial to our skin, from the cult-favourite I’m From Rice Toner to my personal favourite Mugwort Mask

This time they’re tapping into the power of figs.

I’ve reviewed two of the other products in their fig skincare line. Their fig cleansing balm, which is made of 7.8% fig oil water and their fig scrub mask, which is made of fig powder and black sugar.

This fig boosting essence completes their fig skincare trifecta. It’s made of a whopping 62.7% fig extract. Let’s see what this does for our skin.

What is an essence?

But first, what is an essence? It’s not as widely known a product here in North America but Asians, South Koreans specifically, have been using essences for a long time.

An essence is sort of like a magic potion that you apply to your skin. It penetrates deep — molecular and cellular level deep — to help reduce wrinkles and fine lines, and revitalize dull and uneven skin tones.

It’s something you add to your skincare routine to give it a boost. And with daily and consistent use, you can expect smoother, brighter, younger looking skin. Like I said, magic.

This article from SokoGlam can explain it more eloquently than muggle me!

Is an essence essential in a skincare routine?

Whether an essence is essential in a skincare routine is the million dollar question.

When I was building my basic skincare routine, I wasn’t sure either so I experimented. I included an essence for a few weeks. And went without it for the next week.

Lemme tell you, I immediately felt the difference. My face felt less hydrated, looked duller, just altogether unhappier.

So I haven’t gone a day without putting on skin essence since. I switch it up depending on what my skin needs but I always apply something.

Try it and see what works for you.

Benefits of fig in skincare

Now that we’re all essence-aware lol, let’s get back to talking about fig! I never really thought of it as a skincare ingredient so I was so surprised to discover that figs:

  • Are a great source of antioxidants
  • Enhances skin’s hydration (prevents water loss)
  • Fades dark spots
  • Improves skin tone
  • Calms skin’s redness

Specifically, this fig boosting essence:

  • Penetrates deep into our skin for a moisturizing finish
  • Contains NMF (natural moisturizing factor) peptide and amino acid to form a moisture barrier for our skin
  • Boosts our skin’s ability to absorb the other products in our skincare routine
  • Contains polyphenol from the fig extract, which has anti-aging and antioxidant qualities as well

Pretty powerful stuff, huh? All from the humble fig.

Multiple Skincare Products

In addition to fig extract, this essence is also made of:

Ficus Carica (Fig) Fruit Extract, Dipropylene Glycol, Glycerin, Propanediol, 1,2-Hexanediol, Water, Pentylene Glycol, Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate, Chlorella Vulgaris Extract, Glucose, Panthenol, Butylene Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Diphenyl Dimethicone, Fructooligosaccharides, Fructose, Triethylhexanoin, Sodium Hyaluronate, Xanthan Gum, Disodium EDTA, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Seed Extract, Allantoin, Betaine Salicylate, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Octanediol, Tocopherol

Other things to know

  • Packaging. The essence comes in a 150ml glass bottle. It’s heavy and feels sturdy. And although it’s a pretty purple, the product comes out clear.
  • Fragrance-Free. Unlike the cleansing balm and the scrub mask, this boosting essence doesn’t have that sweet and fruity fig smell. It has an almost imperceptible fragrance out of the bottle but it’s gone by the time you apply it to your face.
  • Texture and Consistency. This fig essence has a watery consistency but feels a little thicker than other essences I’ve tried (like Missha and Neogen). It also feels somewhat oilier upon application.

How I use my fig boosting essence

Essences are applied after cleansing and toner, and before heavier and thicker products like serums and moisturizers. And no, you don’t wash it off. You want all those nutrients to stay on your skin!

First, I tried to apply it like how I do my other essences — by putting a few drops into my palms and gently patting it all over my face.

However, I always ended up putting way too much product using this method so I switched to saturating a cotton pad with it and applying that to my face. Much better.

I then allow my skin to fully absorb it before I move to the next step in my regimen.

What I like about I’m From Fig Boosting Essence

Like the fig cleansing balm and the fig scrub mask, this fig boosting essence makes my skin feel amazing. I think my skin loves fig!

  • Gentle and No Irritation. I’ve been using this product everyday and have had no bad reaction to it at all. No stinging. No breakouts. It works well with the other products in my routine too, including retinol and AHA/BHA.
  • Smooth and Bright Skin. And it does make my skin feel so smooth and soft, and look brighter and more radiant.
  • Fragrance-Free. Unlike the other 2 products in their fig skincare line, this boosting essence is finally fragrance-free. I’m so happy about that!

What I don’t like about it

The only thing that bugs me about this product is the slightly oily feel it has upon application. And it does take longer to absorb than other essences I’ve tried.

But those are really minor things given how lovely this product makes my skin feel and look.

Important FAQs about fig boosting essence

Is it good for oily skin?

In general, I would recommend essences to everyone.

However, I’m From Fig Boosting Essence has an ultra-moisturizing effect which I like but might be too much for oilier skin types (I’m a combination dry in the winter and combination oily in the summer).

That said, my spouse has oily skin and this essence works just fine.

Dry skin, on the hand, would definitely benefit from this essence, especially if you struggle with rough, flaky patches. This essence will not only hydrate your skin, it will also help get rid of dead skin cells.

Each skin is unique so the only way to know is to try!

Can I use it as a face mask?

You can definitely use this fig boosting essence to make a DIY face mask. All you need to do is soak a few pieces of cotton pads with the essence and place it on areas where you experience extra dryness and flakiness.

You can also soak a dry sheet mask with the product and use the mask as you normally would.

Do I need to use the whole fig line or can I use this product with other brands?

While the fig skincare line (I’m From Fig Cleansing Balm and I’m From Fig Scrub Mask) was developed to work together to help us achieve clear skin, you can use each product on its own and can still expect:

  • A delivery of antioxidants
  • A hydrating finish
  • The removal of dead skin cells, and
  • Enhanced skin texture

You can also use it with other skincare brands; just make sure to watch out for interactions between active ingredients.

Do I recommend I’m From Fig Boosting Essence?

In a rating scale of 1 to 5 — 5 being awesome — this product is definitely a 5 for me. In fact, it’s replaced my go-to essence!

I’m a big fan of essences and this fig essence is definitely one of the better ones out there. I’ve used it with the fig scrub mask and the 2 products together just worked wonderfully.

Fig is a glorious ingredient with lots of skincare benefits and I’m glad I discovered it! Hope you try it too.

As always, remember that every person’s skin and skin type is different so what might work for me might not work for you, and vice versa.

So before trying a new product, it pays to do a little bit of research first. Pay special attention to ingredients that you might have a reaction to.

And doing a patch-test is always a good idea. Unsure? Best to consult your dermatologist.

And practice good skincare habits always.

Happy skin experimenting!
